Find out more about root canal treatment and when it’s necessary.
Are you currently dealing with a toothache? If so, you may be wondering what’s going on. Our Bothell, WA, dentist, Dr. Kimberly Chapman, is here to provide you with the answers you’re looking for to determine whether or not you will need root canal therapy.
We know that not everyone experiences the same symptoms (or symptoms at all), but it’s important to come into our office right away if you notice any of these warning signs:
Toothache: Dental pain can manifest itself in different ways; however a toothache is a definite warning sign that something is wrong. Everything from severe and persistent pain to minor, intermittent discomfort should be addressed right away. You may also notice that the pain gets worse when chewing or biting down on the tooth.
Sensitivity: Have you suddenly noticed that whenever you take a sip of an ice-cold beverage or enjoy a steaming hot soup that the affected tooth is more sensitive to these hot or cold items? The sensitivity may feel like a zinging or zapping that remains long after coming in contact with the food or drink.
While these are the two most common symptoms that could mean that a root canal is on the horizon, you may also notice these other symptoms too:
- Gum swelling and tenderness around the tooth
- Tooth discoloration or darkening
- A bump or growth on the gums near the affected tooth
Don’t ignore your dental symptoms. The sooner you seek treatment the better, and our Bothell general dentist can provide you with the immediate dental care you need.
Why do I need a root canal?
Reasons for needing root canal therapy include decay, infection and trauma. The dental pulp inside the tooth is made up of nerves and blood vessels. The pulp can become infected or inflamed by direct trauma, decay or bacteria, and when this happens the problem cannot be reversed; the only option is to remove the pulp in order to preserve the tooth.
Call our Bothell, WA, dental office immediately if you are suffering from a toothache or other problems. We can provide you with the urgent dental care you need.
