Dental ImplantsAre you in need of a dental implant?

Dental implants are a procedure that can restore your smile by integrating into your jawbone. Your dentist in Bothell, WA, Dr. Kimberly Chapman, is here to help and advise you!

What's a dental implant?

If you're suffering from tooth loss, it's vital to deal with this problem as soon as possible. Tooth loss may lead to serious issues like bone deterioration, teeth drifting and shifting, and your bite changing. When people are missing teeth, their face does not have the support it needs, which prematurely ages their appearance. Missing teeth also causes your chewing efficiency to be compromised and results in uneven forces being placed on other teeth, which can make them more likely to crack or fracture.

The dental implant procedure consists of the following:

  1. A local anesthetic is applied to the necessary area
  2. Your doctor inserts a titanium post (a biocompatible material that isn't rejected by the body's tissue) in your jawbone. This is like a very small screw.
  3. The doctor surgically closes the area and allows it to heal for a period of 3 to 6 months, while the process of osseointegration takes its full course (osseointegration is when the bone grows around the implant and locks it into your jawbone).
  4. When you return 3 to 6 months later, your Bothell dentist will re-open an area about the size of a match head, insert an abutment, and place a crown over the abutment that matches the rest of your teeth.

Advantages of Dental Implants:

  • Implants have a high success rate. You will never get a cavity on an implant.
  • Dental implants look natural and can give you a beautiful smile.
  • They don't slip out of place like dentures, which makes them comfortable and practical.
  • They are used to fill a single gap in your teeth, a few gaps, or all of your teeth.
  • You won't have to worry about being able to bite into and chew your favorite foods.
  • They can last a lifetime if cared for properly.
  • They provide your jawbone with the support it needs so that it doesn't shrink.

If you are missing one or more teeth, dental implants can offer you both security and comfort as a permanent replacement. Implants look dental implantsand function like natural teeth, and help preserve tooth-supporting bones in the jaw that deteriorate when a tooth is lost.

Our family dentist in Bothell, WA, Dr. Kimberly Chapman, can examine each patient and determine whether they are a good candidate for dental implants.

About Dental Implants

Implants are made of biocompatible titanium and surgically placed into the jawbone. They are the strongest, most natural-looking and natural-functioning artificial teeth available, and they will never be lost due to decay.

A typical dental implant has 3 parts:

  • a screw-like titanium device which is placed into the empty tooth socket,
  • a metal alloy abutment or extension post that is screwed into the titanium implant, and
  • a porcelain crown that sits on top of the abutment.

The titanium implant is placed during a simple, in-office procedure into good quality bone. After some weeks or months of healing, the jawbone and implant fully join together through a natural process scientists call osseointegration. Osseointegration anchors the dental implant, making it feel and act like a real tooth.

During a subsequent visit, your Bothell family dentist screws the metal abutment to the implant, then may either bond or screw the custom-fabricated porcelain crown to the abutment. The patient brushes and flosses the artificial tooth just as they would a real tooth. In fact, good oral hygiene keeps the implant free from plaque and tartar. Plaque and tartar can threaten implant retention by causing loss of bone, just as poor oral hygiene creates gum disease with natural teeth.

Implants are Versatile

Implants can replace one tooth or even multiple teeth lost to decay, gum disease or oral injury. Versatile and lifelike, these prosthetics also support partial or full dentures that can be fixed or removable. Unlike traditional bridgework, implants are not supported by neighboring teeth. Also, implant-supported devices provide unparalleled chewing and smile aesthetics. The jaw bone actually strengthens in density and size the longer an implant is in place!

In terms of oral hygiene, dental implants should be cared for the same way as natural teeth with regular brushing and flossing 2-3 times a day. Excessive biting or tooth grinding can lead to the implant failing due to metal strain and metal shearing of the abutment or screw, so a night guard may need to be worn.

All is not lost if you are dealing with tooth loss. Find out how you can restore your smile with dental implants.

Just because you are dealing with a missing tooth doesn’t mean that you have to give up on having a great smile. While it can feel ratherdental implants defeating or embarrassing to have one or more gaps in your smile, know that our Bothell, Washington dentist Dr. Kimberly A. Chapman is here to help. Find out how a dental implant can replace your missing tooth for good.

Whether you are someone who just needs to replace a single missing tooth or you are unhappy with how your dentures fit, dental implants might be the best option for you. Made from durable titanium, implants are small post-like screws that naturally integrate into the jawbone in order to replace the missing tooth’s roots. Without the constant stimulation that a tooth provides, the jawbone begins to deteriorate, affecting your facial structure, your bite, and even how you chew or speak. Implants are the only tooth replacement option that actually prevent jawbone deterioration by stimulating the bone beneath them.

Once the implant is anchored into the jawbone (a natural process called osseointegration), our Bothell, Washington dentist can now place an abutment on top of the implant. An abutment is made from either porcelain or metal and is designed to attach the implant, which lies under the gums, with the visible dental crown or other dental restoration (e.g. dentures). Implants are versatile because they can either replace just a single missing tooth or all of your teeth by supporting dentures.

While dental implants offer a lot of advantages that other tooth loss treatments don’t, this treatment may not be right for everyone. Dental implants are ideal for people who maintain good oral health, who are in good health, as well as those who have strong underlying bone in their jaw.

Dr. Kimberly A. Chapman is here to provide you with all the dental care and treatments you need to get your smile looking and feeling its best.
